BEAR: The Bear is the spirit keeper of the Western Quarter, and brings the powers of patience, strength, and fearlessness. The ancient Celtic word for bear is "artos" which is found incorporated into numerous names. The goddesses Artio and Andarta were both Bear Goddesses. The Greek Goddess, Artemis, could shape-shift into a bear, and the similarities to her name and that of the old Celtic for bear cannot be denied. So, bears have indeed played quite a role in ancient legends of the Gods, the Celts and others.
